Every time we return from a vacation and first see our Gene Fisher home, we are delighted by how beautiful and efficient it is.
Gene and his staff worked with us for months to customize our Sky Ridge home, resulting in a residence that came in on time and on budget. More importantly, the house suits us.
We’ve known Gene Fisher for a long time and expected him to be honest and skilled; he’s been building homes, businesses and industrial buildings for nearly 40 years. However, we didn’t fully appreciate his creative capabilities. Whether it’s sighting a house on a hillside for optimum view, solar, and drainage, designing a Zen front door, or installing infrastructure for the future, Gene seized design and construction challenges with both professional expertise and creative exuberance.
Gene Fisher works with some of the best including Tom Umbau, Durango architect, and Chris Paloukas, job supervisor and indefatigable consultant on everything from towel bars to roof tiles.
Finally, Fisher’s cost accounting is absolutely transparent throughout construction. We knew where every cent was going, and he saved us money, allowing us to make upgrades without going over budget.

Flexibility, technical knowledge, and smart measures to keep costs contained are how I would describe working with Gene and Chris on a recent new home project in Skyridge. We came to GFCH (Gene Fisher Custom Homes) after meeting with several other builders in the Durango area. When we approached them I had a lot and a set of plans. I had developed the plans w/ a local architect and engineer. Having personal experience in construction I knew what I wanted in the home design and I was not going to compromise much.
The flexibility mentioned above came from Gene's ability to look at my plans and change needed technical mistakes that were on the drawings. The flexibility also came when further structural design changes were needed to to accommodate the large southern exposed windows that were part of my plans to allow for solar gain.
The technical knowledge was in the utilization of modern building techniques. Our plans were drawn with R19 walls and an R35 ceiling. Gene recommended a new insulating product that gave use gains in R value in the walls to an R26 and in the ceiling to an R50. Gene also added some other technical improvements in the slab insulation. We finished the house with a 95% efficiency furnace. Even with all of the glass we had designed in we built a highly efficient house.
In regard to smart measures to keep cost contained, Gene looked at my existing plans and recommended some changes to reduce construction costs. Part of these changes came in changing the way the concrete work was designed and part was done in the way the house was framed. With these changes we were able to stay within budget.
With the changes that have occurred in the housing market, I was set on coming in on budget and I was very clear to Gene about this at the onset of the project. I didn't want to go beyond budget and create negative equity in the project. Gene and Chris were really good at working with their local suppliers and subcontractors. This along with the technical changes allowed us to come in on budget. I had past contacts from suppliers in Albuquerque and brought in quotes for much of the higher priced items. The prices Gene obtained from the local suppliers beat my Albuquerque quotes.
I'm not saying building our new Durango home was a flawless experience, it was not. Anyone who has dealt with a sizable remodel or any new construction knows that these types of projects are never finished with out problems during the process. What I'm saying is I would highly recommend working with GFCH on a new construction project. If I ever build again in the Durango area Gene would be first on my list to call
